St Francis Church &

Community Hall

A phased scheme of works on the Grade-II listed church comprising the refurbishment of the existing church hall and an award-winning extension providing expanded community facilities.

Following a competition, we were appointed as Architects on this interesting and challenging project. Refurbishment of the existing church hall, following its damage in a serious fire in 2011 which rendered the building unusable, was the first priority.

The following extension to the church involved looking at many options and extensive consultation with interested parties including the Twentieth Century Society and Church Council.

The design of the extension is in a deliberately more modern style than the church, whilst respecting its architecture and scale. Glass is used to separate old from new and the original exterior brick wall is retained as a feature internally. The project received a Salisbury Civic Society Conservation Award in 2018 for ‘outstanding work to an existing building’.
